Crate Expectations: DJ Spinna

Go deep with the underground specialist.

The underground urban dance champion has an undoubtable knowledge about tunes. From hip hop to soul to funk, from collaborations with Eminem to Stevie Wonder, DJ Spinna's got the nous. Here's his Crate Expecations:

What was the first song you loved?
I used to play the 45 single of Smiling Faces by the Undisputed Truth a lot as a young child. Not really understanding the full meaning of the song I associated the smiling face lyric with happiness, but the song is really dark!

What were the first two records you mixed together?
That's really hard to remember but I a have a memory of mixing doubles of El Coco's Let's get it together when I was about 12 years old.

Which track/song symbolizes happiness for you?
My theme song is Love Is The Message by M.F.S.B. When I die I want this entire song played at my memorial. It's 40 years old this year, and I always feel the same joy when I hear it.

Which track/song symbolizes sadness for you?
"Evil" by Stevie Wonder from the Music Of My Mind album. It's extremely haunting. I've often skipped that song when listening to that album.

What's the song your children need to hear?
Bubble Gum by The Free Design is a bubbly and happy tune. My daughters love it, especially since they love gum.

Which track/song have you been playing non-stop for the last months?
I wish I had an answer for this. I generally keep it moving.

DJ Spinna.
