Crate Expectations: Traxman | US | Translation

Chicago ghetto house and juke veteran shares his favourite records from Kraftwerk to Teklife.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Chicago ghetto house and juke veteran Cornelius Ferguson, aka Traxman, who first put out music with Dance Mania Records in the Nineties. He's also one of the co-founders of Chicago's G.E.T.O. DJ'z and a member of footwork label Teklife.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved? Traxman: B.T. Express' "Express" because of the groove it had, I could feel it even as a child.

What are the first two songs that you mixed together?
Weeks & Co.'s "Rock Your World" and "Numbers" by Kraftwerk. When I first started to beat match, they were perfect for starting out with.

What's your worst guilty pleasure song?
I gotta say Man Parrish's "Hip Hop Be Bop (Don't Stop)" because of that electric mood.

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
DJ Manny's "Feel My M.F. Bass" because of the head-turns it gets and how it moves the speakers.

Which track of your own do you love the most?
"Footworkin On Air" from Da Mind Of Traxman. The mood of the track is like riding on top of a cloud.

What track of your own do you hate the most?
Well, I'm gonna have to say "Mic" from Da Mind Of Traxman Vol. 2, it's honestly not my favorite work.

What track are you most excited to drop in a set?
DJ Duke's "Blow Your Whistle" because of how amped up the crowd gets.

What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set but doesn't?
"Let There Be Rock" from Da Mind Of Traxman Vol. 1. I guess, sometimes it's kinda hard to make it work, but sometimes I just slide it in.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
Derrick May's "Strings Of Life". It's such a jam that it takes you to another place, and it seems as if the party would never end. DAMN GREATEST SONG OF ALL-TIME!

You can catch Traxman at Toronto's Studio Bar Dec. 26—more info here.
