10 Albums Anomie would take on a Roadtrip

With a car soundtrack this good you don't even need a destination.
A Potapova

Sofie Loizou knows music, every stretch of the terrain. A composer, producer, media artist and classically trained performer, Sofie has charted an impressive course through local scenes and international movements. Recording as Anomie, Sofie is a skilled navigator of electronic, psychedelic, beats, bass, soul and dance, and will be bringing this expertise to our THUMP party in Sydney tonight, alongside Beat Spacek and Edd Fisher. Alongside the live show, Anomie is preparing for a busy few months, releasing a new track on a Moontown Records compilation in May, a Permanent Revelation remix EP in July on All in Your Mind Records, and a full length album arriving at the end of the year.

For now though Anomie has kindly prepared an impeccable playlist suitable for a long road trip. And where Sofie goes we follow. Listen below, and RSVP here for Anomie's set at THUMP.

1. Stereolab - Cobra & Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night
"The Free Design"

You can pretty much play the album Cobra & Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night from beginning to end and it will be a great companion on the road, and this goes for nearly all of Stereolab's extensive discography. The persistent rhythms and circular melodies helps smooth the bumps on any long tedious stretch of highway.

2. Shafiq Husayn - Shafiq En' A-Free-Ka
"Dust & Kisses"

I'm keeping with the theme of albums with warm driving beats and otherworldly melodies, to keep us feeling energised on the journey and as with the other tracks I've chosen, I'd recommend playing the whole album from beginning to end, it is a real trip and full of little gems like this one.

3. The Beat - I Just Can't Stop It
"Mirror In The Bathroom"

This one made it on the list for nostalgias sake, can't help myself, I grew up listening to this album. I'll sing along to the whole album because *somehow* after all this time, I still remember all the words….

4. Broadcast - Noise Made by the People
"Look Outside"

I could listen to this album every day and never get tired of it. I think it's good to pick music for a long trip that you can get involved with because you have a personal relationship with it. The music and memories blend in with the scenery and makes for an enjoyable journey.

5. Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information
"Strawberry Letter 23"

This one is killer driving music particularly the coda of Strawberry Letter 23, the swirling guitar arpeggios and make a tunnelling affect in your mind when you are on the road. I would pop the album safely in the glove box ready for your next road trip.

6. Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution will not be Televised
"Lady Day And John Coltrane"

When I'm choosing tracks for a road trip mixtape I almost invariably end up with some jazz and spoken word, GSH has a knack with deeply moving lyrics show humanity, and conscience, that take you outside your every-day reality to think deeply about things.

7. Fat Freddy's Drop - Based on a True Story

"Roady"

Musicians know all about travel, we spend hours in planes, bus stations, in transit. Why do we make this massive effort to haul ass across the planet? We do it for the love of music. Fat Freddy's know all about hauling ass, you can almost hear the bitumen hitting rubber in this track.

8. Brainticket - Celestial Ocean
"Egyptian Kings"

When I overloaded the hard drive on my iPhone recording videos, I realised I had to dump pretty much all the music to make room for the phone to function. This was the only album I left on there cos I never get tired of listening to it. The album functions as an entire piece, so it's designed to be listened to from beginning to end.

9. Gonjasufi - The Ninth Inning

"The Lows"

Broke musicians in transit between gigs and jobs will dig this weird little EP from Gonjasufi. This one goes out to all my broke music friends out on the road right now <3

10. Mos Def - The Ecstatic

"Auditorium Ft Slick Rick"

I've made a fair few mix tapes over the years and they partly reflect the tastes of the person I was making it for and partly whatever I was switched on by musically at the time. Over the years some albums have stood out as great listening music on a long trip, and with an artist like Mos Def on your sound system, you are in good hands.

Hit the road and head to the THUMP Party at Imperial Spice Cellar Basement tonight May 8th for a set from Anomie, alongside Edd Fisher and Beat Spacek, courtesy of Rekorderlig Cider. Put your name down on the guestlist here: http://party.vice.com/thump.
