Rave History and Genre Piss-Takes: A Mix From Melt Unit

Sydney, things might just get a little crazy at our THUMP party next week.

Set to grace our upcoming Sydney THUMP party – alongside Cliques, Strict Face and Thomas William at The Chippendale on Thursday December 3 – Melt Unit has done us a solid and prepped a full-on mix as a taste of what's to come. Listen to the mix below, RSVP to the free party right here, and check out our chat with Melt Unit after the embed.

THUMP: What is Melt Unit?
Melt Unit: It's a combination of footwork and 94 era rave, like hardcore and jungle, as hyped up and dancefloor oriented as possible.I like to take the piss out of genres, one goal i have is that whenever you're comfortable, or think you know what to expect, i'll switch it up. In a way, its a product of modern music consumption habits and a culture of very short attention spans. I'm not saying whether that's positive or negative, just how it is now. Not meant to inspire any deep thought, I just want to have fun. In saying that, there is subtlety in there once you wade in, in the density of the edits, and in the sample spotting. Nearly every sound is chosen because its a known cliche or a reference to a bit of rave history.

What have you been up to recently?
I've been in the studio as much as possible, working on a new release of originals and collabs, obsessing over detail, listening to loops over and over. Luckily Ive been able to bring my laptop to work, sinking as much downtime as possible into producing, and refining my knowledge of Renoise. My latest track is a collab with PZG, a polish producer I found online and instantly fell in love with. We've grown separately, but have come to all the same conclusions, been influenced by all the same movements from the past and current, and coincidentally made very simlilar music. We're influenced by the surge of local and overseas footwork in the past two years, and all the rave of our youth.

Can you tell us about your relationship with Cock Rock Disco?
I was stoked when they contacted me to be part of the first round of releases on their relaunch, because I've been a massive fan of theirs over the years. They released a lot of fun mashups, breakcore and really bent underground electronic music. So many amazing releases on there like DJ Rainbow Ejaculation, Otto Von Schirach's Oozing Bass Spasms, and b.i.n.t.'s Spider's Webs and Magic.

How and where was the mix recorded?
The mix was recorded in the comfort of my lounge room, with ableton live. To be honest, my primary focus has always been on producing tracks, in my repertoire of dj tricks is pretty limited. My focus is Renoise, and learning as many techniques and cheats as possible. I recently taught a renoise tutorial for the This is Not Art festival in Newcastle, and basically i've devoted all my time to this obscure DAW. It's the closest workflow to the sample trackers on the 90s, that so much of that classic rave was written with, like Protracker for the Amiga and Fast Tracker for the PC.

Can you tell us about the idea behind the mix?
It's a collection of my latest originals, collabs with others, and remixes other people have done of me. Its the same vibe from my live set.
