D∆WN’s New Album Can Be Experienced in Virtual Reality

The tech-savvy artist has shared a trailer for her latest full-length.

Today marks the release of Dawn Richard's (aka D∆WN) new album Redemption, the third and final installment in her Heart LP trilogy. Though it's described as a coming of age album in which she tackles heavy topics such as race, gender equality, and female empowerment, it also cements her status as an experimental, holistic artist who's found her niche in the avant-garde space between electronica, pop, and R&B.

Always ahead of the curve, Richard has brought Redemption to life via a virtual reality album trailer. Created with the help of VR artist Sander Sneek, she's realized a purple-filled world and placid lakes, where its ethereal inhabitants can walk on water. "By using a specific color scheme and abstracting the characters, I visualized a place for all souls no matter color, gender or creed," Sneek told The Creators Project. It's a place that seems heavily inspired by album-closing track "Escape," as Richard paraphrases the lyrics by adding, "At the end of the video, I call out to others out there looking for something better… where rebels are the 'majority' and a different skin color isn't 'minority.'"

Richard previously utilized high technology this year when she became the first artist to perform live in 360 degrees on YouTube, and she also used virtual reality in a video for recent single "Not Above That."
