LA Newcomer Character Sounds Like Röyksopp Covering Crystal Castles

His debut EP is dense, heady, dark and challenging. Not for the faint of heart.

This 6-track, self-titled EP is the first release from LA-based electronic artist Character, but the level of sonic adventurism suggests this isn't the mysterious artist's first crack at production. The EP, put forth on the equally mysterious London label Hard Up, sit well individually, but there's some weird form of Prana energy at work on this EP connecting them all together

The Character EP is supposed to be consumed as a seamless and flowing track, one that takes you on a trip through dark atmospheres as you traverse Character's spacey soundscapes. The sojourn builds from the frenzied, hip-hop echoes of "Ministry" to the bone-rattling industrial noises of "Reprise," stringing you along in a strange hypnosis all the while as you're bombarded by a combination of airy wind-chimes, alien voices, and space-ship synths.

The whole thing climaxes on the 5th track "The Maniac II," proving Character's ambition as he dares to challenge French-techno god Gessafelstein with a track brimming with void-like intensity.

Get your headphones on and go sit in a dark room, because that's what you'll want to do your listening to this EP, set for release on July 6. And don't come out until you're finished!
