No Artificial Colours Bring Their Good "Werk" to Skream's 'Of Unsound Mind' Imprint

Listen exclusively to the new EP and read the chat we had with the lads about it.
A Skream sandwich, with no artificial colouring.

There's no two ways around it. Skream is without a doubt one of the hardest working figures in clubland. As of last year, when he's not packing out nightclubs or entertaining massive festival crowds, he's now responsible for putting out music on his own label, Of Unsound Mind. For the imprint's 14th release, the big man has enlisted his good friends No Artificial Colours. The duo have already released on the label before, back in August, and this time they have come through with something decidedly huge.

Despite regularly filling rooms, most notably during their Sankeys residency in Ibiza this summer, NAC's productions are normally relatively lithe affairs—for slammers then tend to take a fairly delicate approach to flooding the floor. The story couldn't be more different on the Werk EP. The three tracks on display here are relentless body bashers. Heavy hulking weapons designed for the dead of night. You can listen to the EP exclusively below, and scroll down a little further for a chat we had with Skream and the boys.

THUMP: You guys met after playing a 'Skreamism' show a couple of years back and have since played numerous gigs together. How did you hit it off?
Skream: TBH it was just a case of really getting along and a mutual respect for each other. Don't get me wrong, there have been some mad after party sessions since but I guess we'll save them stories for a rainy day!

This is the second EP from No Artificial colours on Of Unsound Mind, Skream tell us a bit about the label in general.
S: I think like many labels, this was a way for me to release some of the wicked music I was being sent. All of the releases are from friends, friends of friends, or people I've met on my travels.

Tell us something funny about your friendship that we might not know?
No Artificial Colours: Well, we just always have fun! And buzz off mutual respect for the same music generally. There are loads of stories, the 3 of us have quite a "laugh" when we go on the radio together. We were live on air once before when there were massive technical issues, we say laugh but I suppose it wasn't that funny for the poor producer, who was basically having a heart attack. There was complete silence when our mix was supposed to start for what felt like an eternity. Also not too long ago at Groovefest in the Dominican Republic we were all out for breakfast and Oli (Skream) decided to pretend it was one of our friend's 30th birthday, we ended up with the whole restaurant singing happy birthday. We got a free cake out of it though! We know it's been done before but it was very funny. Yes we are kind of childish.

Tell us about your new EP, 'Werk'?
NAC: It's a three track EP, and we can't wait to get it out there. It's a little bit tougher than some of our other stuff so we are looking forward to everyone hearing it. We really like what the label is about too, it feels like it doesn't have a set agenda other than just putting out really decent tracks that people are vibing off.

What was your favourite gig of 2015?
NAC: Very hard to pick a favourite! Having a residency with Magna Carta at Sankeys Ibiza was definitely a highlight for us and of course we always LOVE LOVE LOVE playing Fabric Room 1, always!

What have you got Coming up for 2016?
S: Gonna keep releasing some amazing music on 'Of Unsound Mind' and working on a solo album for Crosstown rebels. Maybe playing a few gigs too!

Werk is out now. Order it here.
