NORTHMIX: Dabow

Dabow's style is hard to peg down, but damn what a ride.

We had to bring back Argentinian producer Dabow after his premiere with us last month for his debut EP Louder on Buygore Records.

Dabow's NORTHMIX is glitchy, tripped-out trap the whole way through, filled with brilliantly melodic flourishes and grimy bass wobbles. The tight 30-minute package veers from ambient, almost cinematic influences, to jungle call-and-response and tribal drums — even B-Real from Cypress Hill makes an appearance.

Beginning with a childish melody so deceptively low-key it's like being lulled to sleep, it seems necessary to reiterate the day-dream quality of Dabow's work. The ease with which the mix flows from style to style feels utterly effortless, like a musical bricolage formed from bits of audio detritus lodged deep in the subconscious.

Sort of like the day after an overindulgent night out, Dabow leaves you with glimpses of things that may or may not have happened. It's probably impossible to be sure, but goddamn what a ride.
