Hideout Review: Day Two

Another day of sun-dappled, bass-heavy magic in Croatia.

Our second day at Hideout saw team THUMP split into two parts for a double the pleasure afternoon in the sun. Half of us zipped over to Zrce — which we'll get back to — and the rest of us boarded a sweltering minibus and wound up and down rolling vistas on our way to a pretty swanky hotel for a pretty swanky afternoon party.

Said party saw the likes of Artwork, Eats Everything, and Huxley playing a super relaxed, B2B2B2B2B2B set that kept the swimmers, in the pool below, happy. We even managed to pick up a bit of a tan. Oh, and the all you can eat buffet was great too. Who could say no to a plate of chips, beans, grilled octopus, chicken thighs, sauerkraut, lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup, potato croquettes and watermelon? Not us.

The rest of the squad had positioned themselves over at Kalypso, arguably Hideout's classiest venue. Tucked away at the end of the beach, it must be one of the only clubs in the world where the dancefloor is littered with massive trees that grow up through the floor. Seriously, it's like someone picked up fabric and dropped it into Epping Forest or something. Playing host to a 20:20 showcase, we caught great sets from PBR Streetgang, and Ralph Lawson, a Citizenn and Ejeca B2B, and an absolute masterclass in house classicism from the one and only Kerri Chandler. Chandler never fails to deliver and watching him romp through tune after tune, surrounded by the inescapable mountains of the Adriatic coast was a pleasure without parallel.

The evening saw us regroup, and Papaya was the place to be. Resident Nicola Bear got things off to a zippy start with a few hours of no-frills, heads-down, bobbing house that went down a treat before Gotsome smashed through an energetic, eclectic array of bass-heavy thrills. Next, the ever reliable Shadow Child did his thing before chart-botherer Duke Dumont kept the crowd shuffling till the sun started to peek from behind the darkness.
