My First Club: Markee Ledge

The Kosheen founding member takes us back to his first ever Sub Club.

My First Club takes us back to the beginning, transporting DJs and producers back into the depths of their memory, asking them to take us on a trip to those pivotal first nights in clubland. Following entries from the likes of Michael Mayer, Herve,MK, Slimzee, andHudson Mohawke_, _we caught up with Kosheen member and drum & bass, trip hop pioneer Markee Ledge.__

My first visit to a club was Sub Club on Jamaica St in Glasgow. I went with my friends Colin Steven (Kmag), Danny, Ali, Gordon and a few others. We would take the bus, and then we would walk down from the Rock Garden bar, where we always had pre-Sub Club drinks. The queue was long, so we would try to skip it sometimes—if we knew someone already in the queue.

As soon as we stepped inside we felt a mixture of relief and excitement—"quick get your coat in the cloak room and get on the dancefloor!" The DJs that night were Slam Boys, DJ Harri, Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle (AKA Slam). It was all old funk, rare grooves, early acid house, hip house stuff and we stayed right through until the end at 3.30am.

Afterwards we got the late night bus from George Square, number 803—Transcard thrown back out of the bus window to save on bus fares! We went back Sunday night, and every week afterward. It really did change my life. It became a club of people and friends, a meeting place for like minded music lovers. We used to take some hash in and sneakily smoke it in the toilets! Naughty! One night we went to see 'Age Of Chance' at the student union and invited them down to the sub Club, they were blown away with the vibe and atmosphere. Also, spending New Year in the Sub Club with good friends from all over the country, Sheffield Crew came up to sample the Glasgow Sub Club Vibes!

"Make Your Move" is out today on Kosheen Records.
