The Future of the Arches Looks Brighter After it Secures Advance Funding

The venue’s board of directors met with Creative Scotland and Glasgow City Council to discuss its options going forward.

In the last couple of weeks THUMP have been closely following the trials of Glasgow institution The Arches, after the city's licensing board limited their license to midnight curfew, effectively destroying its capacity as a club. The news shook DJs, producers, promoters and party-goers in Scotland and beyond, inspiring a widespread petition to repeal the decision.

We brought you the news last week that The Arches were discussing their options in terms of appealing the decision. Following a meeting yesterday (26 May) with The Arches' board of directors, stakeholders from Creative Scotland and Glasgow City Council, their appeal against the ruling has now been officially confirmed.

The confirmation of this move has been made possible by the securing of funding from stakeholders that will allow the flexibility to pursue legal action – a costly process that otherwise might not have been possible. An official statement from artistic director Lucy Mason and executive director Mark Anderson states: "Having taken appropriate legal advice, we believe there are grounds to appeal the decision of the Licensing Board and will now proceed on that basis."

The funding will also allow The Arches to fulfill an earlier commitment they made to delivering their current programme of events. "The Board of The Arches is grateful for and has agreed to the funding package offered by Creative Scotland and Glasgow City Council, which provides for stability in the short-term as we look to find a more permanent solution in the weeks to come."

Keep an eye on THUMP for further updates on The Arches situation.
