FCL's Straight Fire Mix is a Friday Winner

Belgian bangers.

Belgian duo FCL — Red D and San Soda — have been smashing clubs for the last few years with their subtle blends of good time house and dank techno. They've also crafted one of the breakout records of the last few years, "It's You", which we actually premiered here on THUMP way back when in 2013. They're kind a of a big deal so we obviously jumped at the chance to listen to a mix they'd put together for us before appearing at Belgium's Extrema Outdoor festival. It zips through Aphex Twin to disco with both ease and aplomb.

THUMP: What does FCL stand for?
Red D: A very quick Google session will answer that one immediately, but any bloke with a decent love for the beautiful game should immediately know what the F and the C stand for. And yes, we are both still playing actively in between gigs.

How did the two of you hook up as a duo?
That's kinda related to question one but our very first meeting was in a local bar in our Belgian hometown Deinze, which is close to Ghent, called Clues, where I was having a night with Chicago legend Tyree Cooper. And once you go house…

Did you ever expect "It's You" to be as huge as it was/is?
If we would have known that beforehand…we would have made three more like that by now… So no, we didn't. We did know it was gonna be pretty big in our circles judging from the dancefloor response, but between pretty big and how it turned out…there was still some leeway left.

How does it feel to have put out a track that features on both Monki's fabriclive mix AND a Tesco advert?
Well, to be honest, we don't know about Monki, so thanks for the head's up on that one! And as for Tesco, we don't have Tesco in Belgium nor Germany (where San Soda has been living for a while), so it kinda passed us by a bit. Could explain our royalties though…

What was the inspiration behind this mix?
We decided to start a mix with Aphex Twin and then see what happened from there. The result is what you will hopefully be listening to whilst reading this, a pretty dark 'more techno than house' affair.

What's next for FCL?
We are finishing up four new tracks with our favourite vocalist Lady Linn and also with our dear friend Gustaph, lead vocalist of Hercules & Love Affair. Other than that both San Soda and myself are mostly DJ'ing every single weekend and buying vinyl to go DJ with during the week.
