New Techno Club Populux Opens in Detroit Just in Time for Movement

Chicago legends Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak played b2b on opening night.

Techno is re-taking control of Motor City with the arrival of Populux—a new dance club in downtown Detroit, just in time for Movement. Housed in a former rock venue called Magic Stick, the club celebrated its opening on Saturday night. Chicago house legends Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak shared the decks as they went back-to-back, DJing in front of a minimal background of LED strips.

Populux will be co-run by local DJ/producer YOS and longtime promoter Amir Daiza, who also owns top EDM club Elektricity. The duo recently teamed up to launch a music label called Obsession Detroit, whose signings will guide the direction of the new club too, they told THUMP.

Jason Wakefield, Populux's Marketing & PR Director said in a statement: "We want to thank all of Detroit for a beautiful opening night. Couldn't have asked for a better vibe or mix of people from younger fans to old-school house and techno 'heads' and everything in between. We are very excited for the continued rebirth of Detroit Techno at Populux."
