Norwegian Electropop Icon Susanne Sundfør Heads Stateside

After the release of her critically acclaimed Ten Love Songs last month, American audiences are about to find out what all the fuss is about.

Just over a month since the release of her much lauded album Ten Love Songs, Norwegian songstress Susanne Sundfør is headed stateside for a string of intimate dates to re-introduce American audiences to her unique brand of electro-pop. Sundfør's current iteration sits somewhere between ABBA and M83, but her sixth album is a departure from the aesthetic she may be known for. "I would say I've made a transition to a more electronic sound," Sundfør tells THUMP. "But I've never had an overall plan. It's happened quite naturally."

The album, produced and written largely by Sundfør herself, is buoyed by a tightly curated selection of collaborators. Anthony Gonzales of M83 appears on "Memorial," as do fellow Norwegian superstars Röyksopp on "Slowly." The album's other two collaborators are a little more obscure: Jonathan Bates of Mellowdrone and Big Black Delta and Lars Horntveth of Jaga Jazzist round off an eclectic bunch, but all take a backseat to Sundfor's creative vision.

"They're all brilliant musicians and composers," says Sundfør, but she kept outsider influence to a minimum as she forged her own path. "I had so many ideas and clear visions of how I wanted my songs to be arranged, it didn't really make sense to me to invite someone in who I then would just have to dictate tasks I could just do on my own."

Sundfør's three date jaunt will be just a taste of and for American audiences, but it's familiar ground for the Norwegian. "I did a tour in the US in 2013 and absolutely loved it," she says. "I love the American audience because they're so engaged in the music, so I'm really looking forward to the next tour."
