Palm Trees and Balmy Breezes are Putting Portugal on the Festival Map This Summer

Lisbon is the rare capital city in Europe with actual beaches. Its location on the Tagus River and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean means it gets balmy breezes even in the heat of summer. Organizers behind Piknic Électronik, the summer festival born in Montreal and since spread to cities like Melbourne and Dubai, clearly had this in mind when they chose the Portuguese city as the new location for their festival.

Taking place at the Tapada da Ajuda park, a green space a quick two miles away by foot from the city's much-loved beaches and blessed with a view of the water itself, this will be the second Piknic in a European beach city, following the expansion to Barcelona in 2012.

"It was natural for us to turn to Lisbon for further European expansion," Piknic co-founder Pascal Lefebvre said in a statement. "This is a city with an exceptional climate, as well as a festive spirit and relaxed charm that make it an ideal destination for Piknic."

Portugal's first Piknic starts this July 26 and runs every Sunday through August 30. Lineups are being unveiled on July 7.
