Kapote Likes to Listen to "Weird, Uncategorizable Stuff"

The Last Record: the Italian-born, Germany-based producer selects new tunes from Duke Hugh, Obalski, and Bello FiGo.

Whether it's for playing out at a club or listening at home, DJs and producers typically have an encyclopedic hoard of music, new and old. In The Last Record, they tell us about the last three songs or albums they've purchased, and why these were important additions to their music collection.

This week, we spoke to Kapote. Kapote is one-third of the trio behind the German Toy Tronics label, which aims to release new forms of jazz, disco and funk-inspired dance music. His most recent 12", Get Down Brother, was released late last month on Toy Tronics. Last week, Steve Bug selected Kapote's Get Down Brother as one of his most recent purchases.

Duke Hugh - Canvas

I really like what's coming out on Rhythm Section. It very much has the vibe of mid-90s, jazzy, mood-infected house music. Not in the cheesy way, but always with a cool unpretentious vibe and the right samples, a soft bass drum, raw cut percussion loops, nice chords and harmony-filled sections. Some broken beats are included here, too.You can hear this especially in the new album by Duke Hugh. It's all about rolling grooves. No need for aggressiveness or boring repetition. It's music girls like to shake to. I like girls ... and Duke Hugh.

Obalski - Wind-s

Obalski is one of the many cool dudes from Munich making inspiring music at the moment. He is switching between electronic music and contemporary theatre soundtracks. He does live performances, and used to work at a pop-up bar that we had in Munich some years ago called the Rubybar. That's where I met Obalski. And that bar was a place where most of my friends from the Munich label Mafia were DJing and hanging out. With Public Possession, Permanent Vacation, Gomma, Toy Tonics–yes, we are many–there is a lot going on in the old Moroder Munich Disco town.

Bello FiGo - "Referendum Costituzionale"

I am Italian and I like weird, uncategorizable stuff. Here is something I found yesterday and am happy to share with you. They are African kids who came as part of the immigration wave over the Sicilian canal and now live in Italy and make hip-hop. They perform in an Afro-Italian language that is not easy to translate. Their lyrics are sexually hardcore and ultra-political, concerned with current Italian politics. This has created some disruption in Italy, but the kids have style. Word!
