UK Nightlife Culture a Top Priority for New Government

The announcement comes on the heels of a similar announcement from London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

According to a report from the BBC, improved regulation of clubs and bars is a top priority for the new UK government. Tom Kiehl, the Director of government and public affairs at the industry body, said prioritizing the industry is "very much on the ministers' plates," adding, "The night time economy is something the government will be considering very closely going forward." Between 2005 and 2016, more than half of all UK clubs shut down.

Organizations such as the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA) were created to monitor the shutdowns and help offer or enact new initiatives. A recent study from NITA indicates the UK nightlife economy–which also includes restaurants and pubs–is worth £66 billion pounds and employs nearly 1.3 million people.

These new promises come on the heels of an announcement from London Mayor Sadiq Khan who announced an upcoming appointment of a "nightlife czar" to oversee and ensure London maintains its status as a 24/7, world-class destination for culture. "Too often, these venues find themselves under threat from new development and red tape," Khan said. "Our night clubs and music venues are the lifeblood of our international music scene." In May, we wrote about how mayors like Sadiq Khan nourish nightlife culture in their cities.
