MIXED BY Boxcutter

The Irish bass experimentalist and Planet Mu OG mixes up footwork variations.

Irish experimentalist Boxcutter has always known how to avoid a pigeonhole. His early records—Oneiric in 2006 and Glyphic in 2007—forced indie media to sit up and pay attention, at a time when dance-rock darlings like LCD Soundsystem and The Field were the most experimental items on Pitchfork's menu.

Like Burial or The Bug, Boxcutter rode the dubstep wave out of the UK and into global culture in the mid-2000s, but soon pivoted to newer, weirder, hybrid styles (and frankly, he never made dubstep in the first place).

He has gracefully followed the evolution of underground bass music, departing from IDM-inflected 2-step and garage to dabble in the high-tempo syncopations of footwork and future bass. Meanwhile he's held firm to jazz-fusion chord progressions, sci-fi sound design, and metallic rhythms even as the template has shifted with the tide of the underground.

His Gnosis EP will be out December 16 on Cosmic Bridge Records, a label managed by Om Unit, another label-resistant artist trading in hybrid forms. It will be available on vinyl 12" and in digital format. For now, lucky THUMPers, you can dig into Boxcutter's cache of high-tempo footwork variations in this 40-minute long exclusive mix just for us.
