TR!CK$ Goes ON DECK to Showcase Jersey's Future Sound

"I wanted to make a statement, I wanted to turn heads."

Hailing from Plainfield, New Jersey, 22-year old TR!CK$ is one of the most promising young stars of the Jersey club scene, emerging from the movement's third generation alongside other young scene pushers like Nadus, Kiff, and R3LL. 2015 was a standout year for the artist, with numerous features across the pond on BBC's Radio1 as well as notable support from around the world via artists like Cashmere Cat, Lido and DJ Hoodboi, all of which are helping expose his sound to an audience far away from the Garden State.

2016 is already looking good for TR!CK$ as he gears up to drop his debut EP BAE, an all-originals release that expands on his carefully crafted sound of samples, squeaks, and frenetic bass hits. Along with his new ON DECK for THUMP, we caught up with TR!CK$ to pick his brain on all things Jersey: from the real difference between Philly and Jersey club, his favorite dance routine, and where he envisions the movement going in the years to come.

ON DECK: TR!CK$ by Thump on Mixcloud

What inspired your name, any story behind it?
I chose "TR!CK$" because I always tend to surprise myself in my productions. It's very rare that i go into a project with ideas or even a game plan. I know it's a very unorthodox name to choose, but thats what I love about it.

So many sub-genres and movements seem to fade away. Do you ever get worried Jersey Club will lose its momentum?
I wouldn't say that I'm worried, it's all about your approach and how you present it to the world. It's just time for a new approach, and [Jersey Club] will only be as strong as the ones producing it. There are producers in Jersey half my age at home working on the 'New Generation Sound.' If we continue to keep the same drive and push sounds the way we do, I don't ever see the movement fading away.

So what exactly is the true difference between Jersey, Philly and Baltimore Club?
Philly Club is generally faster and uses a lot of sirens and horns and just has more of an uptempo, extra hyped-up kinda feel.

Baltimore Club is slower and the sampling is really raw and simple. It has more of an old-school house feel. It also has a very gritty approach and doesn't really follow any kind of song scheme as opposed to Jersey Club and Philly Club.

Jersey Club isn't as fast Philly Club, but faster then Baltimore Club—the chops are cleaner and there is much smoother sound. It also has a higher use of the bed squeaks and the 'dick' sample.

You Think You Know But You Have No Idea: The Difference Between Baltimore, Philly, and Jersey Club

What's your favorite Jersey dance to do yourself, and also watch someone else do?
Rock Ya Hips. You can ask anyone, I'm always doing it at a party, in my room, or when I'm just vibing out in the studio. Im not the best dancer and this was the only dance I could do and really just have fun doing. One dance I love watching people do is a really old dance called "Ride That Wave"… just Google DJ Frosty Ride That Wave and you'll see it.

We hear you have a debut EP dropping soon. Tell us a bit about it.
Well I've been working on an EP for some time now. It's called BAE,__ which stands for 'beats', 'and,' 'emotions'. Every track on the release represents a different emotion.

What can we expect in your ON DECK mix?
I wanted to showcase the future talents of Jersey, so I Included a lot of upcoming and underground producers. I wanted to make a statement to let people know i'm here—I wanted to turn heads.
