Empress Of Proves She's Certified "Icon" Material with New Video

Her debut LP might have been about forgetting to love herself, but things have turned around for the Brooklyn-based producer and singer.

In her interview with THUMP in September, Lorely Rodriguez—AKA the LA-originating, Brooklyn-based producer and singer Empress Of—discloses the origins of her debut LP, Me: "It's definitely a selfish record. It's inspired by a particular relationship, yes, but it's more about how much I forgot to love myself throughout that relationship, and after it."

Rodriguez's beautiful new video for "Icon" finds her returning to these themes of loneliness and isolation. Traversing the woods in what looks like the scenic Hudson Valley, then returning back home to Brooklyn, Rodriguez sings, "Just in the room with the lights on / And there's no one who knows I'm their icon / All that keeps me awake is the last line / And there's no one who knows I'm their icon."

These days, it seems like the opposite is true; Rodriguez's music career has taken off in the wake of the critically-acclaimed album, and she's recently toured with Florence and the Machine and Kimbra. So perhaps loving herself isn't so hard nowadays.
