Can we talk about auto-tune for a second? In 2008 the Top 40 chart sparkled with a gaudy layer of techno-cosmetics (the college radio charts too, thanks to cheeky synth bands with plug-ins).

There was Cher in '98, T. Pain in '05, Kanye West in '08—but by 2011 the dehumanized arpeggios and jagged R&B scoops seem to have disappeared from American radio altogether. So thank you, Rafi eL, for writing this charming auto-tuned club smasher. When you've been dancing for six hours it's easy to forget that you've got feelings too, thought it's funny that it takes a histrionic cyborg voice to remind you.

Rafi El is an Israeli-born polyglot raised in LA by Jewish-Argentinean parents and he's linked up with the globally-minded Dutty Artz record label on a forthcoming album, Ay De Mi, which comes out January 28. "Dolor" sees Rafi serenading inna reggaeton style over ruffneck breakbeats and basslines, singing in Spanish and English on what could easily become this year's expat anthem.
