NOISIA Touch Down in Australia with this Exclusive Mix and Interview

See what makes this three-headed musical beast tick.

These self-confessed audio nerds need no introduction. Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen and Thijs de Vlieger are NOISIA and have been killing the DnB game for over a decade now with their sub-destroyer basslines melting the brains of bass heads globally. Hailing from the Netherlands, the musical triad have a sonically inspiring sound. Fuelled with straight NOS style propulsion. Their heaving bass-heavy productions will forever have you sweating, whether you're hearing three minutes of a NOISIA track dropped at a festival or three hours of it while playing Devil May Cry 5.

Since their inception back in early 2003, NOISIA have subsequently become one of electronic music's most loved acts, and the three Dutchmen don't show any signs of slowing things down.

Check out the tracklist for the above mix below.

THUMP: How do you think growing up in the Netherlands shaped your sound, and was it always D&B for you guys?
NOISIA: We started making all kinds of electronic music, as we weren't really aware of the things that defined the genres. But quite early on, when we discovered dnb, it was definitely something that we focussed on, because we thought it was a very technical and challenging genre. And when we did, we weren't really aware of the fact that there were parties where this music was played. Since we were pretty young at the time and there wasn't the magical internet party calendar, youtube aftermovie etc. So in terms of what shaped us in the early days, was what music we could get from the public library, soon the local record store and the music that was played at local nights. Later, of course, we got our influences from all over the place, so I'd say it's not so much living here that shaped our sound.

What are your plans for Vision Recordings now that you have hit the decade mark?
Keep it going! Kind of crazy that we've had our label for ten years. It was never something we thought about when we started, but looking at it now, it has grown to become one of the more essential parts of what we do.

Are there any producers or artists you'd be excited to work with but have not yet had the opportunity to do so?
There are a few, but someone I (Martijn) would really like to work with is Stephan Bodzin. His music has been very influential on me and us, and it would be awesome to write a track with some day.

That Devil May Cry soundtrack you guys did was a beast. How was working on music for a game compared to working on a release?
It was a great experience! It took pretty long, but I think we also got very lucky to get to work with an extremely good music supervisor. We were in touch daily, and he was very good at explaining what they needed. Normally, when you write for your own label, everything goes according to your own schedule and musical ideas. When writing for a game, this is obviously different, but they had approached us because they liked our album, so we still got to do what we do to a great extent.

Who do you believe is pushing the boundaries of sound design in this day and age?
It's so much harder to be impressed these days. There are tons of synths that practically make crazy bass sounds for you, so it's become a lot less special.

Have you gotten any new hardware or software that you've been really getting a lot of mileage out of? What are some of your favourites?
Serum!

Tell us something that people wouldn't currently know about NOISIA?

"Dead Limit" features yourself and Kiwis The Upbeats.

Creatively what was it like working with the boys from Wellington, and how did the collaboration come about?

We've worked with The Upbeats a bunch of times now. Not quite sure how we met anymore, but it was years ago. We've always been big fans of the approach they have towards d&b and production in general, some kind of organic touch. That's also what they bring to the studio when we work with them, plus a bag o' vibes.

What other projects should we be looking out for?
All the stuff that we're putting out on our labels! That's our way of showing people what music we like. For example, we've recently rebooted our Division imprint, releasing projects like Two Fingers (Amon Tobin's beats project) and Sofie Letitre (a singer songwriter in an electronic environment).

And finally, will the Prodigy collab ever be a reality?
Hopefully!
