Crate Expectations: Danny Daze

Former B-boy Danny Daze on his first loves: Kris Kross and Donna Lewis.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Ultramajic's techno titan Danny Daze

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Danny Daze: I'd probably go with the first song whose lyrics I memorized verbatim: Kris Kross's "Jump"

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
I bootlegged a mix for my B-boy crew in middle school. Sugarhill Gang - "Rappers Delight" into Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - "The Message."

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
Donna Lewis - "I Love You Always Forever." The goal is to replicate her music video too.

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
I've been listening to Outkast's Aquemini album again like crazy.

Which track of your own do you love the most?
None of them… and I'm serious, I'm not trying to sound modest. I get tired of hearing the crap I make. The closest way to answer this is, I really just like what I'm working on at the moment—all the unfinished stuff.

What track of your own do you hate the most?
No reason to ever hate any of your own stuff, you released it because you liked it at the time. You can get tired of hearing it which is always the case for me, but something you hate? Nah.

What track are you most excited to drop during your peak time at the Ultramajic Showcase in Miami?
I've got a classic booty record lined up, a rare instrumental I've been looking for forever that works really well in techno sets. I'm not gonna say what it is because then it won't be a Shazamfest. You don't see those instrumentals floating around on your torrent sites much.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?

Someone please end with my guilty pleasure! if not I will!!! Catch Danny Daze at the Ultramajic Party Temple, sponsored by THUMP, at WMC 2014 on Thursday, March 27.
