While Sydney, Australia has been grappling with the effects of new sanctions on nightlife, the underground dance community is certainly alive and well nine hours to the south in Melbourne. We've seen an explosion of talent come out of the city in recent years, with fresh talent like Air Max '97, Andras & Oscar, Francis Inferno Orchestra and Fantastic Man catapult themselves to the rapt attention of an international audience, and define the deep and woozy sound of Melbourne house music. Now add Ara Koufax to the running tally. The Melbourne house and techno duo of Sam Gill and Luke Neher have only put out a couple of tracks to date: a single for Cutters Records and a self-titled EP on their own label, Downtime. They've already gained support from the likes of Tim Sweeney and Caribou who have dropped their tunes in DJ sets, and Australian electronica heroes Cut Copy, who released Ara Koufax's track "Brenda" on their Oceans Apart mix and compilation. Now the duo have locked in their next release, a two tracker called "Kissy Fits" which premieres on THUMP today.First up is title track "Kissy Fits," whose sunburst melody climbs higher and higher, but stays together with a steady motorik beat that feels like the gradual crawl toward the first moments of summer. On the flip is "Infrared," a lush and lighthearted electro jam that slowly builds and wafts away before snapping into a deep bassline groove. Check out both tracks—out now on Cascine's singles label CSCN—right here.
