Crate Expectations: Dennis Ferrer

From love ballads to church prayers, Objektivity's label head goes old school.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Dennis Ferrer.

What's the first song you ever loved?
Sigmund and The Sea Monsters "Friends" by Mark Klingman and Buzzy Linhart.

Okay look, I was four years old. This was my favorite TV show and it was all about Sigmund! A friendly little sea monster while the rest of his family was fiendish. I'd sing along as soon as it came on and nobody—I mean nobody could interfere with my flow! Some kids dug H.R. Pufnstuf, but not me. Sigmund with the faux Jerry Curls was the one and only.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
"Our Father, The Lord's Prayer" and "Hail Mary" let me explain. I went to a religious Catholic elementary school in the Bronx, New York because my parents thought the strict discipline would help keep me straight in a neighbourhood that was overridden by crime and all sorts of unscrupulous characters. Well, that didn't work so, one day I had to go to confess all of my sins to the priest in church—which, by the way, took some time.

He told me that in order to receive his forgiveness I'd have to say five "Our Father's/The Lord's Prayer" and ten "Hail Mary's." I said thank you, left the confessional, got on my knees and began to hit my "Our Father's" then I forgot the words. So I figured fuck it, they sound the same, He's not here and I mean he isn't going to care, that dude's got bigger fish to fry.

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
Absolutely embarrassing, but fuck it. "A Te" by Lorenzo Jovanotti Cherubini. It's an Italian ballad; I mean this shit is genius! He wrote a song called simply, "To You" I mean, what the fuck? It's so simple, so heart wrenching. A wedding song for the ages. It's a song that I would've loved to write to the love of my life when you just can't find the words to say what's inside, you just simply say "To You." The piano arrangement is beautiful and when that guitar kicks in with the string arrangement, voila! It's a wrap. I don't expect many people to understand this one but if your mind is open, and you respect ballads and the song writing involved, then this one is a definite tearjerker.

What song have you had on repeat for the last month?
Mari Kvien Brunvoll's "Everywhere You Go (Ricardo Villalobos Remix)." This record is absolutely freakin' ridiculous. Deep, sexy, underground, vocals, Villalobos doing what he does. It's an acquired taste but once you eat it a few times…You're hooked.

What track are you most excited to drop during peak time at the Objektivity label night?
Guillaume and The Coutu Dumonts "Ghetto Indigo (Original Mix)." It's not new, it's about five months old but the main melodic line is outrageous. There's not much to say about this one, you either get it or you don't. But damn I've been hooked on it. Very underrated.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
Marshall Jefferson's "House Music Anthem." Come on, there's really no need for an explanation here. It is the definitive, be all end of all house music anthems forever. If you don't like this one then I just don't know what to say. This is the true definition of HOUSE.

What's the last song you want to hear before you die?
I know I've gone old school on here, but it deserves to be mentioned. Odyssey's "Inside Out." It's all about the string arrangement here. This is a serious piece of dance music. I can't say much except it always jars my emotions. I close my eyes when those strings come on and I just lose myself in the beauty of the music.
