Next Hype: Murlo + Exclusive Download

A wine conoisseur heats up the dance with grime-dancehall hybrids.

The second you hear a Murlo song in the club you immediately know it's his. The DJ and producer (born Chris Pell) grew up in a small town in England called Shepshed and eventually moved to London where he created his own sound based on dancehall, soca and UK grime. It seems that there are an unlimited amount of his edits floating around the internet, most of them dancehall reworks, and all of them awesome. Download his new track "Icebound" below and find out more about why he's one to keep your ears on.

Where are you from?
I currently live in London, originally from the Midlands.

One line about your hometown?
Bleak but filled with nice family.

How did you get your name?
Mixture of wine-based puns and videogames. Always had the idea of starting a radio show called Chateau FM. So basically, yeah, the wine.

What labels do you record for?
Had past releases with Pollinate, Low Up, Mixpak and self-released some stuff. Currently putting the final touches on EPs for Unknown to the Uknown and Senseless as well as a 12" with Glacial Sounds.

What did the first ever track you made sound like and what was it inspired by?
The first tune I made under Murlo was an edit of Busy Signal featuring Machel Montano "Whoii Gal Whoii." Listening back now, it's mixed so bad and it's rough as hell, but I had so much fun making it and it kind of gave me the bug of wanting to make more tunes. I wanted to add a sublow bassline to the tune and I gave it some extra percussion 'n' that.

Who is your best friend that also does music and what are they like?
I got loads of talented mates; I'm pretty lucky to be surrounded by 'em. Although I regard all my mates with the same love, Inie & Karen (Hootiewho & Kazabon) are guys that I speak to most regularly about music. They are also the heads behind HDD, the club night that I'm resident at. I send them 90% of what I make for feedback – I reckon they have more of my tunes than I do.

What's the best environment to hear your music (real or imagined)?
I always wanted to DJ at a swimming pool with a wave machine. A gig in a cave would be good as well. Any promoters reading this that own a cave hit me up.

What is your favorite sound (or sounds) right now?
I'm listening to some new grime, stuff from Slackk and Mr. Mitch as well lot of early grime too; Jammer and Wiley productions. Also a lot of dancehall from various places, mainly Nigeria and Jamaica.

Name three non-musical inspirations.
Videogames, Boris Vallejo, CGI.

Who is one up-and-coming artist you think we should look out for?
Nigerian artist Burna Boy is someone I rate – he's been pretty consistent with good tunes. From over here in the UK, there are a bunch producers making their stamp; Samename, Inkke and Samrai, to mention a few.

What's next for you?
Excited about my 12" release with Glacial Sounds. Also gonna be playing some more shows here and there and I got bunch of tunes I'm sitting on that'll hopefully see the light of day anytime soon.
