There's Seven Ways to Jack with Denney's Ultimate Acid Tracks

The Poker Flat producer's given us a crash course in the best uses of the 303 in the world...ever!

Denney's probably the biggest acid house fan in the north east of England. We've got no way to actually verify that, but hunches, every so often, can be relied on. So that's what we'll do. As a producer and a DJ —he's released on the likes of Ministry of Sound, Hot Creations and now Poker Flat, and played out everywhere from Back to Basics to DC10— he's not been afraid to infuse things with that signature bleep and rumble of a detuned 303. Check out recent single, aptly titled "Acid (You're Free)" for confirmation of his commitment to the sound of '88. With a contemporary twist, of course.

Given all that, we decided to ask Denney to delve deep in his acid-soaked crates to come up with his seven essential acid classics. Proving that the sound didn't vanish into thin air in 1990, he's picked a selection of next level jams that span nearly two decades worth of jackin' madness.

1. A Guy Called Gerald - Voodoo Ray (Greg Wilson Edit)

Denney:

I could listen to "Voodoo Ray" all day long and never get sick of it, it has been one of my favourite ever records for years. This edit by Greg Wilson is amazing and is the version I play a lot in my DJ sets.

2. Da Posse - In the Heat of the Night (Acid Mix)

I can't get enough of this record, it is from 1988 and still sounds amazing today. The percussion in it is so good and is one of those tunes that when dropped at the right time takes the roof off.

3. Tomboy - She Hit My Head

I first heard this record on Andrew Weatherall's fabric 19 compilation and it blew my mind. This is about as peaktime as it gets and my favourite record by Tomboy who is actually Tomas Barfod.

4. Alexkid - Don't Hide It (Acid Vocal Mix)

This track has stayed in my sets for years, it's on the brilliant F Communications label which is owned by Laurent Garnier. Such a sweet vocal over such a warped acid groove…amazing!

5. Williams - Piccadilly Circuits

This record takes me back to being on Back to Basics dancefloor listening to Paul Woolford and having my mind blown at 5am. Williams seemed to go off the radar in most recent years but luckily he left us with this weapon of a track.

6. Jessica Elle - The Thrill of Love (Levon Vincent Remix)

My good friend Buckley introduced this tune to me over 10 years ago and it still sounds amazing, a truly timeless piece of Acid House and my favourite piece of work by Levon Vincent.

7. Fast Eddie - Acid Thunder (AA AAAcid)

This is the first track I ever played with a 303 in it and holds many memories of playing it at some of my earliest gigs. It's a true classic and I will never get sick of this record.

Denney's "Acid (You're Free)" is out now on vinyl and is taken from the Poker Flat Forward to the Past 3 digital compilation released 20th November. You can buy the vinyl here.
