Lovebirds and Galliano Channel Roy Ayers (and Greek Mythology) In This Soulful Springtime Jam

"Icarus" is being released on a special Record Store Day 7" package by Brooklyn's funky powerhouse label Razor-N-Tape.

If you're like me and slept through most of eighth grade, you may need to be refreshed on the Greek myth of Icarus. Icarus was the son of a skilled craftsman named Daedalus (not the DJ, he came after) who created a world called the Labyrinth (not the movie, that also came after). Long story short, Icarus and his pops were not so keen on life in their new home, and eventually Daedalus decided to construct bird wings out of wax so they could escape. Icarus flew too close to the sun, which melted his wings. If you're wondering what's relevant about this sad tale of aviation gone wrong, look no further. Below is a song by the name of "Icarus," which will soon be pressed to and released on, yup, wax by Brooklyn's own funk and disco powerhouse, Razor-N-Tape Records, for Record Store Day.  The release comes courtesy of nu-disco staple Lovebirds, real name Sebastian Doering, and features some seriously soulful croons by another chap named Galliano. "Its been quite a journey for this one to get to where it finally ended," Lovebirds told THUMP over email about the release. "It started many years ago as a little Roy Ayers infused instrumental and finally came together when I met Rob, a.k.a Galliano, in Thailand many years ago. Being a hero of my early 90s UK hip-hop days I was very happy that he was into working on this one." Try it on for size below. The special multi 7" package gets released on April 22 alongside remixes by label co-head JKriv, Moods, and Tall Black Guy.
