At the end of last week the old Internet exploded with a lot of breathless excitement about how the GZA was collaborating with Neil deGrasse Tyson to produce a spacey superalbum. “Neil Degrasse Tyson joins the Wu-Tang Clan!” shouted one headline. GZA has long been known to have an interest in science, so a collabo between a Wu-Tang legend and a science superstar didn’t seem so totally out there. I mean, if Ol’ Dirty Bastard (RIP) could make an appearance on America’s Next Top Model, why not GZA/NdT?

Not so fast. “FYI: News reports that I am teaming up with Wu-Tang’s GZA to make a Hip Hop album are not entirely accurate,” Dr. Tyson wrote in an email this morning. “Actually, they’re just false. I had the fellow as a guest on a soon-to-be-aired episode of StarTalk Radio. That’s when I learned he was greatly inspired by the universe and by my writings on the subject – both of which informed themes and lyrics that will appear on his next album. Somehow, in the internet blogosphere, that morphed to: ‘Tyson & GZA are collaborating on a hip-hop album’”

So, yeah, that’s too bad. It turns out that GZA and NdT have indeed hung out, and the former has apparently taken away some good science knowledge from their chats that he’s planning to use on an upcoming album. But, yeah, that epic space album just isn’t happening. Which is too bad, because I’d love to hear it. But the real sad part is that this means we’ll likely never see a GZA-trained NdT battle Brian Greene.
