Here's Why Martin Solveig's "+1" is the Definitive Club Banger of 2015

A special Club Angels report.

When it comes to going to the club, we all know that being on the guestlist is cold, hard evidence that you're a somebody - at least in that dirty club that you're about to step into. It's floors are probably covered in gum, running water is a luxury and it is likely 83.5% of that place has been covered in vomit at some point; but it's role in the social hierarchy is undeniable. The club social hierarchy is a fragile construct, influenced by which power couples you're friends with, which club promoter gives out the most drink cards and who are the +1s.

The +1 is older than time itself - no doubt Adam was Eve's +1, Justin Bieber used to be Selena's +1 and I've had a long history of +1s myself. It's a faux pas to flaunt it, can lead to awkward conversations when you ask for it and is definitely a joy to receive it. But if 2015 has taught me anything, besides the fact that Kanye West definitely should be president, it is that we need to break down our boundaries and crappy learned behaviours, embrace things that have made us cringe in the past and praise Martin Solveig for creating the song of the year - '+1'.

A hook that anyone and everyone can relate to, 'Can I be your plus one?", Solveig has singlehandedly turned a question that was once as awkward as asking your friend for that $10 you lent them back, into a club banger. ("Can I have my ten bucks" really isn't as catchy.)

If you don't know who Martin Solveig is, he is one of the leading figures in EDM at the moment, but he's been making music for quite a while. I first discovered Solveig as a teen when I came across tracks like his 2007 release, 'Cabo Parano' a very seductive french house track and his bongo banger, 'Come With Me'. 14 years after releasing his first song, he dropped 'Hello' with Dragonette and cemented his place in pop music, well before the EDM boom. It seems only fitting then that the biggest club banger of 2015 comes from Martin Solveig himself.

+1 is a squelchy, upbeat, slice of dance heaven that has you hooked from the very first drum kick. It begins with Sam White's powerful vocals flirting with your ears, distracting you from your feet uncontrollably tapping and then, before you know it you're fumbling through your phone looking for Shazam. It's big room meets 2007 electro meets future house and while that seems like a nauseating combination, it's strangely hypnotising in the same way Nike heels are.

The beauty in Martin Solveig's masterpiece isn't in the production, it's in the poetry. Seduction of the holder of the +1 comes first, "ever feel you're naughty for the fun". Without messing around, only a second later we cut to the chase and the question is dropped, "can I be your plus one?" This is followed up by promises of being "everything" as long as you say "I've got that triple A" and then the demands come - "can you play my song". Weirdly enough, this sounds like an eerily accurate recount of the 2 times someone has flirted with me to get free entry into the club I've had door spots to.

'+1' is a generational anthem, for who amongst us can deny the honour of having their name on the door girl's iPad. To be someone's +1 is a privilege, only shelled out to one person, and fought over by friends, lovers, acquaintances and a bunch of other people in your phone's contacts list as a result of too many wet pussy shots. There is no gut-wrenching dilemma quite like deciding between giving your best friend of seven years or this really cute guy you've been dating for two weeks your freebie. Of course this song isn't about the +1er but the +1ee, and that is simply what makes it so beautiful.

My biggest +1 triumph came in the summer of 2013, when I had struck up an admittedly really fucking odd friendship with a really famous Deep House dj over Twitter, as well as someone who managed a really famous DJ (he produced a song for Kanye). They were playing at a local music festival and were both really keen to hang out with me. So they shelled out some free tickets. This wasn't my first rodeo and I needed back up from boyfriend, my two best friends, my new best friend and her boyfriend, a long lost friend and her best friend who I had never met. I asked for a +1 x 7. And I received a +7. And they were all AAA passes. Martin Solveig should be so proud.

Asking for a +1 is gutsy. This is an anthem breaking down the awkwardness for everyone out there who doesn't know the promoter, whose best friend isn't dating the sideroom dj and for those who didn't repost the drink specials on their Facebook. This is a song that says, this is who I am and if there's anything that I want right now, it's to be there next to your name as your +1.

What makes this the biggest song of 2015 is that it's the song of the people. It's a song that belongs in the club because you wouldn't be in the club without it (unless you paid $10 entry). It's a song for the people who need a +1 because they could use the money for ciggies. It's a song for the people who need a +1 one because they need to pee really badly and the line is way too long to wait in. It's a song for the people who spent all their money on new pair of Y3's and need somewhere to show them off. For those who have asked, for those who have given and for those who have received a +1, this song is for you.
