Diplo Thinks This Syrian Wedding Singer Will Be EDM's Next Star

Omar Souleyman is an unlikely indie music darling to say the least. The singer went from performing industry wedding halls in northern Syria to rocking international stages seemingly overnight.

Omar Souleyman is an unlikely figure to burst onto the EDM scene. The singer went from performing in dusty wedding halls in northern Syria to rocking international stages seemingly overnight. And in June, Souleyman released his sixth international album, "To Syria, With Love," on Diplo's Mad Decent label. Apparently, Middle Eastern wedding music is pretty good for crowd surfing. Souleyman no longer lives in his hometown in Northern Syria. It's not just because of the war. He's now so famous overseas that it's just more convenient for him to live in Turkey, so he can fly to his international gigs. VICE News caught up with him during his most recent American tour to ask him why he dedicated his album to Syria, and what it's like singing for people who can't understand the lyrics.
