Firsties and Faves: Metronomy

His first kisse, his favorite sensation, his first time getting stoned… Metronomy's Joseph Mount spills it.

It's no secret that we love Metronomy here at Noisey. We love Joseph Mount and his sonic weirdness and his new(ish) 60s-indebted record

Love Letters

and all the field recordings, rituals, and crepes that went into making it.

We love that

the video for "I'm Aquarius"

features giant hairless cats on Mars. And also this sketchy new video for "Resevoir" (above). The touring quartet recently completed part of a Stateside tour with fellow Noisey favorites

Cloud Control,

but they'll be back in a few weeks to work the West Coast. In the meantime here are Joe's firsties and faves.

First kiss:
Joseph Mount: My first kiss I had this crazy love triangle going on. Me and my friend Matthias were going out with the same girl and she knew it. We were just kind of taking turns to snog. Anyway she's a lesbian now.The thing is, that was when I was very young—like nine years old. After that I suddenly became really shy again. So the first proper snog I guess was as a 13-year-old at a party. I don't know. I was nervous but it's one of those things… it's easy now! I'm really good.

First time you got stoned:
That was I think the same snogging party, yeah.

Favorite time you’ve been starstruck:
When you're making music and you're in that world, the magic goes quite quickly, but there are people who have been very kind of creatively important to me. So for example when I met Joshua Homme for the first time, I think we were playing Coachella and I turned around and it was more like, “Oh, there he is, wow,” because Songs for the Deaf was a proper important record to me. The last time I was properly starstruck was when Stuart Price. We were going to play Rockness Festival and a guy who'd worked with us a bit was his tour manager. And he was like, “Oh yeah, Stuart's going to come say hi.” I was like, “Gah!!” I love Les Rythmes Digitales.

I reckon today if I met Pharrell I would be very starstruck. It's only people that I genuinely feel like have done something to me or for me.

Favorite song to dance around your house to:
I guess I do that sometimes with the baby. I quite like listening to The Beach Boys like Darlin’” by The Beach Boys just dancing around.I like it. I don't really know how much music is affecting him yet. Hopefully a little bit.

First concert:
The first concert when I was dropped off by my parents was probably to see a bunch of indie-pop/Britpop also-rans like Mansun and Silversun. It was really odd.

Favorite place on earth:
I really love Porto in Portugal. It's amazing. I would always be very happy to go there. Obviously I like my parents' house.

First thing you were good at:
Probably drawing in primary school. And I was quite good at the obstacle course.

First time you skateboarded:
I started skateboarding around 12 with my friend James. You assume that you were like jumping on the bandwagon—you thought this was a thing which everyone was doing. We would go to this old skate park in Paignton at this YMCA [in Devon, England]— it was concrete and American styled. Me and James, and James' mum went cleaned this place up because it was totally overgrown. And then the next week we went back, and there were people there, and the next week, there were more people. So I think we kind of realized, “Yeah, the time we started skateboarding was kind of the time when everyone started skateboarding.”

Favorite sensation:
I quite like it when you let a bath drain while you're sitting in it. Do you ever do that?

No.
It's pretty funny because you feel the waterline go down around you and as that happens, you get more and more heavy and soon you become cold, but it's quite fun.
