Premiere: Hear the Sound of Miami Boogie on Mickey’s New Track ‘Red Lips’

The South Miami producer and DJ is set to release a new album on esteemed funk and boogie label People Potential Unlimited.

Mickey de Grand IV is the self confessed king of monster gangster boogie. Inspired by the music of Cuba, Rick James and his hometown of Miami, the jazz trained producer busts out synth-laden slow jams and bubbling boogie. This is music with maximum flavor enhancement.

Following a number of releases on his own label Cosmic Chronic, Mickey (no de Grand IV this time around) is set to release his new record Eye Witness on Peoples Potential Unlimited, the Washington DC label that has built a reputation in releasing rare and obscure dance music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

We are premiering the track “Red Lips” which is as smooth and cool as the other side of the pillow. A satin and heavily perfumed pillow from a suite at the Miami Marriott.

Noisey: The COPS episodes filmed in Dade Country were always some of the gnarliest. How are things in Miami now?
Mickey: Miami is my home forever. I will rep Sunset Drive/South Miami until the day I die. Things have gotten better in recent years but there is still a lot of violence and corruption.

You design the album art and covers before starting on a project. The art for Eye Witness is great. Is that photo of you?
Yeah I do the design for all my records. That’s me dream boating on the back of the LP. The front is just some guapo.

You’ve hooked up with PPU who also have a love of boogie and funk. How did this come about?
I started fucking with PPU a few years back. They started distributing my label Cosmic Chronic. The first one was the Psychic Mirrors "I Come For Your Love/Witching Hour" 12 inch and we’ve been happy about the arrangement ever since.

‘Eye Witness’ is available May 1 through PPU and Rated X Records.
