Crate Expectations: Booka Shade

"With songs, it’s like your own children—it is impossible to pick a favourite."
Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Booka Shade.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Booka Shade: Chic's "Le Freak."

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
With a career as producers and musicians that began in the early '90s, we only started to DJ a couple of years ago, so there was no moment like 'I mixed these two records and now I'll become a DJ god.' Although we do DJ shows from time to time, we still don't see ourselves as DJs, but musicians who happen to play records every now and then.

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
Corona's "Rhythm Of The Night."

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
Bombay Bicycle Club's "Luna."

Which track of your own do you love the most?
With songs, it's like your own children—it is impossible to pick a favourite.

What track are you most excited to drop in a set?
We use DJ sets to try out unreleased songs, it's a wonderful playground to experiment. It's a very exciting moment when you drop a new demo and you see how the crowd reacts.

What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set?
If you find the right song that leads in to the one you want to play, you can get away with almost anything. We drop reggae songs or Bryan Ferry's "I Put A Spell On You."

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
Sometimes we end our night with Françoise Hardy's "Comment Te Dire Adieu" or "Here Comes The Sun" by The Beatles.
