Of any semi-big name or big name producer old enough to have existed in the pre-brostep world of dubstep, Modeselektor’s role in the age of Skrillex has to be the most awkward. After all, the duo’s “hyper hyper” bass electro-y heaviness more or less predicted the recent bastardization and subsequent mass-appeal blowup of American dubstep. You could even say they have a lot to answer for, but I doubt Modeselektor in 2005 was anything more than just a prediction, a suggestion of where bass music could go.

After all, Modeselektor also happens to be really good at what it does, a genuine article. Kinda brilliant even. Also funny and self-aware in a way not so much verboten in the Skrillex/Deadmau5 world, but totally beyond it. Anyhow, the video above, featuring a little kid running from a big floppy great dane in a post-apocalyptic landscape, is for “Shipwreck” off the duo’s recent return to the world, Monkeytown.
