Pablo Nouvelle's "Poison" is the Dance Track to Your Sadness

The Swedish-born producer has his own sub-genre: melancholy dance.

There's a much-loved sub-genre of dance music called emotional house. It's mostly Calvin Harris songs like "Feel So Close" and Avicii's "Fade Into Darkness," which simultaneously trigger the need to rage face with an overflowing swell of feelings. You know, that moment in the club when everyone puts their arms around each other and jumps. It's like a rave campfire.

Well, Swedish-born Pablo Nouvelle has his own sub-genre too, but instead of emtional house it's more melancholic dance. Like "Poison," the first track off his forthcoming EP, it's music for the final hours of a big festival, when everyone still wants to dance, but a sadness that it's all ending slowly creeps in. Maybe it's Tulliae who constantly sounds like she's on the verge of tears, or her soft cooing, or Nouvelle's never-quite drop and faint piano keys. Either way, it works. Stay tuned for more beautiful sadness when the as-yet-untitled EP due out on Black Butter Records drops in early June.
