A Mix by Melbourne's Wabz

Listen to the mix, read our interview, and RSVP to our party featuring Wabz and more this Thursday.

Since his summery debut single "Sweetwater Creek," Melbourne producer and beat maker Wabz has become decidedly more dark and industrial. From last year's "Alley," a staggering and introspective track, to "Forest of Feels," out earlier this year, which is what I imagine being a computer coming to a huge discovery might sound like, we've followed Wabz with vested interest.

As we prepare to see him play this Thursday at the Melbourne leg of our free July THUMP parties, alongside Alba, Daze and Elisabeth Dixon, we have the comfort of this mix he made us, and the questions he answered, to tide us over. Read our interview and listen to the mix below.

What are you about?

I wanna move my limbs to some rhythm, meditate to some bass. Do some modern day vibin'. I am about them good times.

Where in the world are you today?

Wonderful Frankston, Victoria.

Favourite record of all time?

Chap One - "Strange Frequencies." It is just a beautiful record.

Tell us about the best time you've played out?

I played a house party in Fitzroy, filled with legends who genuinely were there to get down. It was mental. I love people dancing to my music.

What was the first record you bought?

Placebo - "Taste In Men", single. Classic.

What are you listening too right now?

Ravyn Lenae - "Moon Shoes EP"… Absolute killer.

Where and how was this mix recorded?

In Frankston in my bedroom studio, spinning vinyl through traktor. With my mix critique Michael grooving over on the couch researching our next home brew pale ale.

What are your thoughts behind the mix?

I wanted to build the mix up, get the people moving. Showing some of my fave dancing tunes. I was thinking it was a late night thing, A bit of a darker vibe for the people who are still in the club at 4am absolutely tuned in. Cause' that's how I get down.

What kind of feelings do you want people to conjure from your music?

I just want people to feel. Make their own feelings from my music.

What can attendees of our upcoming thump party expect from your set?

You can expect my attempts at storytelling through beats, I'll try take ya on a journey of the different styles of music I make, expect some different sounding tunes.

What else is to come from Wabz?

Hopefully a new Album by the end of 2016, A new EP for my Bandcamp, Soundcloud downloads. I have to go through all my tunes some time and get some more music out. I am looking for self-help audiobooks on cassette, for my own life and also for sampling. Possibly a spoken word EP. Stay tuned.
