Homework Head Straight to the Top of the Class with this Mix of Dance Classics

We're giving a perfect score for this selection from the Dutch house duo.

Dutch house heros Homework are playing Melbourne tonight, bringing their fresh take on classic and modern dance music to local audiences at Lounge. They are serious producers and serious music fans, and they don't miss much. Ahead of the show Homework have laid out some lessons for us, a list of essential tracks that taught them a thing or two about how to make a classic track.

Vincent Floyd – Cruising (Long Ride)
Homework: This one's definitely a big influence at the moment. Soulful deep house from the Chicago heydays. Warm pads, dreamy drums and a gripping melody. Floyd certainly is one of the first legends of the house music scene of the 90's. One of those guys who 'built the house'.

Andras Fox – After The Rain
We thought it more than fitting to feature Andras in this list. Certainly one of the most inspiring and talented individuals to have spawned from down under. He's from Melbourne, Australia which is the city where our Australia & Asia tour commences.

Harvey Sutherland – Bamboo
Another Australian gem! Harvey performed in Amsterdam last weekend, where we met him for the first time. What a nice guy and what amazing music is pouring from his studio. Everybody on the scene is looking forward to his new EP on Motor City Drum Ensemble's imprint, but (this track from) his EP on Melbournite Andy Hart's Voyage remains one of the best things to have come out this year. Space funk.

Haruomi Hosono – Sportsmen
Never forget about your idols. And never forget to experiment. Hosono got a bit overshadowed by his Yellow Magic Orchestra bandmate Ryuichi Sakamoto, but his ambient work remains very distinct and very unique. It's inspiring stuff for when all the 4x4 beats start to mess with our sanity.

The Other People Place – Sorrow & A Cup Of Joe
The Other People Place was one of the musicians that brought us together musically when we worked together at record store Concerto years ago. Though James Stinson is better known for his work under his Drexciya guise, we prefer the vibey, loungey grooves on his Lifestyles at the Laptop Cafe album and this strange jam on Clone. His analog atmospheres have only just know began to influence our work.

Kerri Chandler – Atmospheric Beats (Original Extended Version)
Any good dj set can use a bit of Kerri. This is one of many versions of dubs and remixes based on his house music masterpiece Atmosphere. But this specific one has kept popping up in our dj sets. Stormer, stomper, whatever you want to call it.

Circle City Band – Magic
Always nice to ride out on a little boogie-funk from the 80's. That description might sound a tad cheesy, but for some reason there's something (wait for it) very magical about Circle City Band's Magic. If you do a little bit of research the only thing you'll find out is that their career was extremely short-lived. Three singles in two years and that was it. Thank God all of those were great!

As a bonus lesson, Melbourne's own dance music gurus 6AM At the Garage have also done their homework, and given us this primer of Homework essentials to revise before the gig tonight.

Homework - I Got One (You're It)
6AM at the Garage: This is the first Homework track that really caught our attention and shifted our sights on the lads. As young impressionable kids this release really brought intrigue to the new Dutch players. It's the sample that really hits this one home. Those dynamic vocals coupled with big piano riff sets it off.

Homework - I'm Into This
Sampling the now famous RBMA interview with the one, the only, Moodymann, you already have a solid foundation. Add some lush deep Rhodes chords and you can't lose. Who wouldn't want to hear Moodymann talking about fucking his MPC?

Taken from last years release on Wolf Music, "Time & Time" builds on the previous work of Tom and Zip and shows the world they can do deep house, pretty damn well.

Homework - Nonlinear Collapse
Although from their to be released EP on Let's Play House, this track is something that's getting us excited. Taking a darker form than their usual club standard the acid baseline in this couples with those dark menacing pads ensuring its place in the late night circuit.

Homework - Palindrome
The title track from their new EP, 'Palindrome' ticks all our boxes. Very Andras fox inspired lo-fi polysynth vibe, but with their winning formula club drum programming. Excellent forthcoming work from the duo. We foresee a bright future ahead of them!

Catch Homework play Lounge tonight, Thursday May 21st.
