Escape Planet Earth for an Hour with This Down and Dirty Disco Mix by Midnight Magic

The Brooklyn nine-piece have serve up a delicious platter of downtown delights to celebrate the release of their new album on Soul Clap Records.

Back when things didn't seem quite so abjectly awful, a group of discomaniacs from New York called Midnight Magic dropped a record called "Beam Me Up." It was a riotously stomping affair, a new-disco record that could have come straight from the glory days of the late-70s when the whole world wore stacked heels, and children recited the words to "Dance Dance Dance (Yoswah Yowsah Yowasah)" in assemblies rather than the Lord's Prayer.

The group's latest album, Free From Your Spell, dropped earlier this month on Soul Clap's imaginatively titled Soul Clap Records imprint, and it is an absolute doozy. In many ways it's the slinky, glamorous, decadent and oppulent disco record that we've been crying out for for years now. The group themselves—all nine of them— have this to say about it:

"We found ourselves digging deeper into a cosmic realm, searching for different moods through harmony, dub, and texture. Always striving to make the beats and bass lines funky while balancing the elements of a big group of people and preserving space within the music."

We liked the album so much that we decided to get them to put together this down, dirty, and utterly divine mix for us. We've been turning to it time and time again in recent weeks. I know, I know, there's a massive argument to be made that going, "Hey, everything's fucked so let's try and forget about it any way we can," is the kind of trite nonsense spouted by know-nothings with their heads firmly buried in the nearest sandpit, but when the world feels this fucked, escapism is more necessary than ever. And hey, if you can think of better escape methods than the following hour of perfectly picked disco, then you need to let the rest of the world know ASAP.
