Talking Euphoria, Carl Sagan and Tycho with Sydney Twins Cosmo's Midnight

We get the lowdown from the wonder duo ahead of this year's OutsideIn Festival.

The 2015 OutsideIn lineup has just dropped, and true to pristine form, the bill features an all-killer mix of left-of-centre internationals and top shelf local artists. Hell, see for yourself: Bilal, Big K.R.I.T, Devin The Dude, Cosmo's Midnight, Star Slinger, Pomo, Total Giovanni, Pender Street Steppers, Kucka and Harvey Sutherland, with over 20 acts still to be announced. Nice. On the eve of today's announcement, we spoke with the wonder twins behind Sydney production duo Cosmo's Midnight.

THUMP: How many times have you been asked 'which one's the evil twin'? How much do you hate it?
Cosmo: Not a lot but enough for it to be slightly annoying? Just make something up!

Do you have a different approach between your festival and club sets?
Cosmo: There is a lot more room to breathe in the club as the walls contain the music really well. Whilst club music can get lost in the expansive festival space, so you kinda of want to go for euphoric tunes that create a sense of grandeur, whilst it the club you can just play whatever you want, they're both fun, just different.

How did you first feel when entering the local electronic music community years ago?
Pat: We were just putting tunes up online without a single care. Now we still make whatever we want but put a bit more thought into how it fits into the scheme of our career, stylistically. There is definitely more pressure now as you constantly want to better your last efforts and make something fresh and exciting, although some fans really do just want more of the same again and again…

How do you see that community now and your place in it?
Cosmo: The community itself is not contained to one particular location which is amazing, we don't really belong to a geographic location just a group of like-minded producers across the globe that enjoy each other's music. One of the best things that's come about fairly recently for us is being able to hit up producers you admire and have a chat and talk music, production, miscellaneous.

Getting the Inside Word on OutsideIn 2015

What trends have you seen come and go?
Patrick: Bassline house seems to be huge right now, it's really gratifying for the crowd, similarly people love that turn up trap music. It seems alot of mainstream bills are exclusively booking 'deep' house and rap acts, not that I don't enjoy both for their own merits but i feel like they can only go so far. DJ Mustard style beats are all the rage right now and I love it. I think that whole vapour wave, witch house stuff has kind of faded out, of course there are still devoted fans that make it and enjoy it but it seems like it peaked around the time of SALEM (it was amazing though).

What sets OutsideIn apart from the rest of the festival calendar in your eyes?
Patrick: You wont get a lineup like this at any other festival in Australia. They put a big effort into curating a list of artists that are rarely brought to Aus. We can thank OutsideIn for so many great acts coming here, like BadBadNotGood, Objekt, DJ Spinn, Shigeto... you don't really see major festivals taking risks on really unique and talented acts going for people they know will sell. It means we don't have to travel to America and Europe to see some really exotic and cool acts.

What's your current outlook in terms of releases?
Cosmo: We've got a long-awaited release of one of our most treasured remixes coming soon, a single and an EP all due to be performed and coming out around Splendour In The Grass and OutsideIn.

Who is the supreme Cosmos host - Sagan or Neil Degrasse Tyson?
Patrick: Tycho and his fake nose.

Finally, which one's the evil twin?
Cosmo: Neither of us. We're both really nice.

OutsideIn 2015 takes place at Sydney University's Manning House on Saturday September 26. Tickets onsale now.
