Val Kilmer Stars in Oneohtrix Point Never's New Video For "Animals"

The track is off his 2015 record 'Garden of Delete.'

Brooklyn experimentalist Daniel Lopatin a.k.a. Oneohtrix Point Never shared the director's cut edition of the video for "Animals," off his 2015 album Garden of Delete today. The clip stars none other than American movie star Val Kilmer falling asleep sitting on the edge of a hotel bed, donning a red Nike tracksuit and tennis ball-yellow shoes. While he is mostly still throughout the video, moving his head only a little bit and opening his eyes occasionally, the main source of motion comes from interjections of rapid-cut editing simulating a strobe effect.

The video was directed and edited by Richmond filmmaker Rick Alverson, while both he and Lopatin co-wrote the story. Alverson is known for the 2012 film The Comedy starring Tim Heidecker.

Lopatin premiered the clip last night at the opening of Ecco: The Videos of Oneohtrix Point Never and Related Works, at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, which runs until November 19. As part of the series he will take part in a discussion about his musical and visual work with Hammer Curator Aram Moshayedi on November 9 called "Visual Cues and Eccojams."

Last year, Lopatin told us the story behind every song on Garden of Delete, and here's what he had to say about "Animals": "The entirety of this song is extremely nihilistic," he said. "It takes place in two different time periods: the first cycle is contemporary day, here at the zoo, and the second cycle takes place at this medieval court with a king and a dying queen. The king character realizes that although he's completely devastated, he needs to move forward with his obligations as king."
