Venus X Dishes On Her Style Icons and Planet X, the New GHE20G0TH1K Store Opening This Weekend

Planet X, the pop-up shop for the influential New York party GHE20G0TH1K, is finally opening this weekend at 448 Jefferson Street #29 in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The preview begins on Friday (August 5) from 6-8PM, and will run from 1-7PM on Saturday and Sunday (August 6-7) during opening weekend. Normal hours going forward will be 1-8PM on Fridays and Saturdays, 1-7PM on Sundays, and the rest of the week by appointment only.

In a press release, the store is described as "a consignment and merchandise shop featuring one-­of­-a­-kind vintage, reference pieces, and select designs from GHE20G0TH1K, KNOWWAVE, THE DIMINISHED, and other cult brands."

The shop is a further expansion of the GHE20G0TH1K brand; back in June, Venus X also launched a music label with a mixtape called Fuck Marry Kill from rising Brooklyn-based DJ/producer LSDXOXO, as well as an online store.

Ahead of the big debut, we spoke to Venus X about the connections between Planet X and GHE20G0TH1K, what kind of swag you can expect to cop, and her eternal style icons—who range from Deee-Lite's former frontwoman Lady Miss Kier to Lil Kim ("the Misa Hylton years," she specifies).

THUMP: You've been talking about opening a store for a while—how long has Planet X been in the works? What are you most excited for?

Venus X: I've wanted to open a lifestyle store to support GHE20G0TH1K for a while, probably as long as I've been touring internationally, so four years or so…. but I couldn't wrap my head around the logistics, storefronts, insane overhead, permits, etc. Eventually I realized I had to do this by any means necessary, and after some really inspiring trips to Tokyo in 2015 I decided I should find a small space and try it out. My friend and I built the entire store from scratch and I had been collecting tons of clothes and accessories from going to vintage shops, thrift stores, and weird stores around the world during my days off on tour—so that's how we developed a really diverse inventory.

What labels will the store carry, and why did you select them? Is there an overall aesthetic that guides how you curate the store?

The store will carry GHE20G0TH1K and DIMINISH, this is our first time ever making merchandise and DIMINISH is a streetwear line some friends of mine from Shanghai started, so we now carry their glasses! We will be carrying merch from Knowwave, Non, Brujas, AlienBody and a number of small runs of commissions and 1/1 pieces from local designers. Every week we plan on adding new merchandise to our inventory so you'll have to stay tuned!

What other non-clothing products will you sell, anything particularly unusual/rare/interesting that you wanna highlight?

The store is starting as a consignment and merch store, but over the next months we have some exciting projects planned to bring a series of USBs, vinyls, books/magazines, and in-store makeup and fang fittings!

What are the connections between Planet X and GG? Are the clothes going to be geared towards nightlife/club wear?

Certainly! The whole point is to create a lifestyle space where someone could experience a fragment of GHE20G0TH1K without attending the party. They could get ready for a party or just have a playful afternoon exploring the stuff at the store.

Do you envision Planet X to be an incubator for upcoming designers, in the same way that GG has long served as a platform for rising DJs and producers, particularly within the queer and POC communities?

Yes definitely, the space is small, but it's always about looking for new ideas, new talent, and new energy to keep the culture moving forward. I take so much inspiration from clothing and specific designers, who remain cult and unattainable to the masses—people who I had no idea existed before I was in my twenties! Hopefully, this store can provide both for designers and consumers a burst of color, inspiration and excitement amidst a really flat consumer landscape that's more about fitting in then developing your own vivid persona.

Finally, who are some of your current (or eternal) icons?

I always say the same ones but they are so good: Lil Kim (the Misa Hylton years), Siouxsie Sioux, Malcolm McClaren (in Clockwork Orange), Rei Kawakubo, Walter Von Beirendock, Prince, Miss Lady Kier, Missy Elliot and Busta Rhymes!
