How Moby Ended Up In A Video with Miley Cyrus and Wayne Coyne

It’s titled "Blonde SuperFreak Steals the Magic Brain" and the trio isn't as unlikely as it sounds.

Today, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne released what will likely be this week's weirdest internet find—a five-and-a-half minute video called "Blonde SuperFreak Steals the Magic Brain" featuring dance music legend Moby and pop music provocateur Miley Cyrus. If you're too busy to watch the video, or still confused after watching it becuase it basically devolves into four minutes of a nonsensical array of flashing images, hot pink slime, space, rainbows, flowers and boobs, Coyne breaks it down:

The video story is something like this: Moby is an evil, power-hungry cult leader. He wants the world's most valuable (according to our story) psychedelic supernatural possession… John F. Kennedy's brain….the brain contains the original formula for the drug LSD!!!

Miley Cyrus has the magic brain!!! And Moby enlists a nympho Manson girl-type blonde superfreak to go steel the brain from Cyrus.

She steals the brain from Cyrus while Cyrus is still in bed in a drug-induced coma. Cyrus finally wakes up and is mega-pissed that her BRAIN has been stolen. She enlists a burned-faced Santa and a lesbian Bigfoot ( that are hovering in a nearby spaceship) to hunt down the blond superfreak that stole her brain. They have a relentless pursuit, all the while Cyrus laments the loss of her magic brain and Moby gains powerful rainbows from hell. In the end, the blond superfreak kills Santa and Bigfoot and a baby mole ends up with the brain…

Oh yeah. And the Flaming Lips are disguised as rainbows, mushrooms and flowers watching from the sky room where a giant diamond explosion happens

But as this artistic rambling may or may not leave you with a bit more clarity, Coyne left out some pretty big questions. For example, how did JFK know the original formula for LSD and why is his brain so jiggly? But we're willing to leave major existential questions aside, for one more important of-this-earth query: How the fuck did Moby end up playing an evil overlord in a video with Miley Cyrus?

1. 1995 - Moby and Wayne Coyne meet

Wayne and I first met in 1995, when The Flaming Lips and I were both opening up for a Red Hot Chili Peppers' European tour. We became friends, shared a dressing room and the same bad craft services, and watched the Chili Peppers from the side of the stage.

A friendship is born. This quote comes from the YouTube description for Moby's 2013 song "The Perfect Life" featuring Wayne Coyne.

2. 1995 - Moby releases DJ mix album under the pseudonym Evil Ninja Moby

Everything is Wrong is not quite evil cult-lord, but it's damn near close to it. He also sometimes goes by Little Idiot.

3. July 17, 2013 - Moby releases his rainbow-fueled directorial debut

For his most recent album, Innocents, Moby made his music video directoral debut. It's an experimental, rainbow-covered look at Moby floating almost-naked through the water with shadowy faces and people in bear and rabbit masks. "A Case For Shame" is dark, creepy and cute—just a little bit like Miley Cyrus's current hot-dog-humping aesthetic.

Moby, in this video's YouTube description:

Oh, and it goes without saying, but it's certainly not a big, commercial video… it's an experimental video, inspired by some of my early heroes of experimental film, like jack smith (who also inspired fellini and andy warhol, so i guess at the very least i'm in good company in citing jack smith as an inspiration, even if i'm clearly not fellini or andy warhol…)

4. September 4, 2013 - Moby and Coyne Collaborate

By now old friends, Moby and Wayne link up for a song on Innocents. In the video they dress up as a mariachi band and walk around the city picking up a cast of weird characters along the way. There's a king, a ribbon dancer wearing an all black body suit and a group of roller-blading ghosts. Eventually they end up taking a trolly to a giant party on a roof with rainbow streamers and more almost-naked people. It's an obvious pre-curser to the uber-weirdness that is "Blonde SuperFreak."

On how it went down Moby said, "I texted Wayne and said, 'Hey, I have a song -- want to sing on it?' Thirty seconds later, he texted me back: 'Yes, send it to me, it will be great.'" A likely conversation went down before the Miley collaboration.

5. July 5, 2014 Miley Cyrus and Wayne Coyne get matching tattoos

The blossoming friendship is set in ink with matching tattoos of Cyrus' dead dog.

But to further the Miley Cyrus and Moby connection there's just a little more to go to see how this threesome all makes absolute perfect sense.

6. May 11, 2010 Moby releases "South Side" with Gwen Stefani

A scintillating duet. Moby meets Gwen, Gwen meets Moby and we all love it. There's enough making out and body rubbing here for a Miley Cyrus music video. Moby even wears a furry pink jacket and sunglasses.

7. September 24, 2012 - Miley Cyrus is Gwen Stefani

Flavor Flav mistakes Miley Cyrus for Gwen Stefani and the circle is complete. "Blonde SuperFreak Steals the Magic Brain" was always meant to happen. Enjoy its rainbow drug-fueled weirdness now that it's finally here.
