Download: Auntie Flo - "Zulu Death March (Weep Weep)"

It's called "Death March," but it's totally not as much of a bummer as it sounds.

Portugal's Enchufada label—run by João Barbosa from Buraka Som Sistema (better known as Branko) and his friend  (also named João)—are giving away a ton of free music from the rising stars of tropical bass. This bi-weekly drop is called Upper Cuts. It's time for Season 2 and we're proud to partner with the dudes in releasing these big bad riddims into the world. Shake something!

Don't worry, "Zulu Death March" isn't as much of a bummer as the title would suggest. It is a heavy tropical listen though, which one should expect from the series by now. Enchufada may have sparked the zouk bass craze, but they've managed to avoid getting stuck in a formula, releasing a range of tropical styles that are often impossible to categorize.

This new single from Auntie Flo sounds a bit like Afro house or kuduro music from Portugal, but remains in its own unique sphere with its patterns and synths. It rests on a base on lumbering African drums and hits hard with some fat analog-sounding synths. Flo is based in London but was born in Goa—a country once occupied by Portugal—so the references make sense. You can hear these influences in a lot of his music, although he generally tends to be a bit more ravey than this and even veers towards the jazzy. Weep weep.
