Crate Expectations: Chaim

A track from The Silence of the Lambs to kick off a party's end. Interesting.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Chaim.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Chaim: Bob Marley's "Lion in Zion." My big brother used to be the biggest Bob Marley fan and from what I can remember, it's one of those songs that used to be stuck in my head because he used to listen to it all the time. Plus we shared the same bedroom. "Lion in Zion" is one of those songs that even when you can't sing the words, you're just mumbling something. It's so catchy that you can't let it go.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
As a DJ, I started playing in small, dark, dirty bars in Tel Aviv. I used to play something between hip-hop, trip-hop, funk, and space disco. One of the tracks I remember that I used to play in every set and mix between was "Full Clip" by Gang Starr and "Playing Your Game Baby" by Barry White.

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
Luther Vandross' "Never Too Much." It's not my worst, but I chose it because it's cheesy funk music and still magical.

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
Guy Gerber's remix of Art Department's "Catch You By Surprise."

Which track of your own do you love the most?
"Love Rehab." It's the most melodic, emotional, and happiest song I've ever made.

What track of your own do you hate the most?
"Chicken Kiev." It's the track I'm ashamed of the most because it doesn't represent who I am, what I am, or what I'm doing in this industry. The only good thing about it is that Karl Lagerfeld used it for a commercial for Chanel watches.

What track are you most excited to drop in a set?
My new track "Cosmology" because I just released it on Rumors this week. It has an epic break that changes the whole track in the middle and always gets great reactions.

What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set?
"Leaving Silence" by Depeche Mode. As old as it is, I feel like it's still relevant nowadays. At every party, there are at least 50 people stashing this track. It's always fun to play a track that people are able to sing the words to.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
"Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus. It's a perfect ending for a messy party. It's also the main track from the soundtrack of The Silence of the Lambs, which is one of my favourite movies.
