Crate Expectations: Richy Ahmed

At least someone likes the new Eddie Murphy track.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Richy Ahmed.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Richey: Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean." It was the first time I had really got into an artist when I was really young. I loved everything he was doing, but that was my favourite track. It's still one of my favourite tracks of all time.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
First two songs? I'm not sure… first two songs I mixed together? I don't remember that!

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
"Alone" by Heart. I love a power ballad and this is one of my favourites, you always play it at afterparties when everyone's really drunk.

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
I have been listening to the new Eddie Murphy song, a reggae one called "Oh Jah Jah." It's mint, you know! He sounds like Bob Marley or something. It's about politics and the world being fucked up and that. It might not be cool but I've actually had it on quite a bit. It sounds really crazy I know, but it's a cool summer jam and I really like the positive lyrics behind the track. You would not believe it was Eddie Murphy in a billion years.

Which track of your own do you love the most?
I can't say that I love anyone track the most, but I definitely still constantly play the "101 Jam" in my sets even now, so that to me has stood the test of time more than any of my other tracks.

What track of your own do you hate the most?
"Tell Me." It was one of the first tracks I'd ever made, in the early stages of production and it's really not my vibe anymore.

What track are you most excited to drop in a set?
That would be my remix of "The Warning" by Logic for Strictly Rhythm. It absolutely goes off every time I play it. I love that it's a remix I've done myself of one of my favourite old house tracks. I think I've done a good job, so it makes me proud.

What's your favourite track that you wish you could work into a set?
Gwen McCrae's "Keep the Fire Burning." Love the track. I always play it at afterparties and disco sets, but I think I'd struggle to fit it in on the DC-10 terrace!

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
The Doorly remix of Mario Cruz's "Little Thing." I always play it as the last track and it works every time. Beautiful track, excellent hook, really good job. Every time the piano chords kick in the crowds just lights on fire.
