Crate Expectations: Shlomi Aber

With over twenty years producing and DJing, Shlomi Aber shows us the pillar tracks that built him.

Like most people, DJs and producers have specific songs tied to events throughout their lives. In Crate Expectations, we extract a playlist from their memories to tell their story. This week's subject: Shlomi Aber.

THUMP: What's the first song you ever loved?
Shlomi Aber: Hmmm… trying to go back as much as I can. I was a Depeche Mode fan from a very young age. I will say a track from their early 80's stuff. Of course I loved many songs before, but that's probably one of my first memories.

What are the first two songs you ever mixed together?
I was officially DJing from the age of 11, even before my bar mitzvah. If I have to guess, I'll say I was playing with some hip hop cassettes like Young ll Cool J meets Run DMC in the mid 80's.

What is your worst guilty pleasure song?
Sylvester's "You Make Me Feel"

What song have you had on repeat in the last month?
"Clones in my Back Room" by Shlomi Aber. But that was mainly checking for bugs before releasing. Once it's finally out I can't listen to it anymore.

Which track of your own do you love the most?
Tough choice between "Freakside" or "Sea of Sand". They are both so different but at the same time very similar. They are very exceptional records for their time, still playing both once in a while by the way. These two are going to stay with me 'till my last show as a DJ.

What track of your own do you hate the most?
I'll say "Black Funk Hi". By now I hate bunch of my tracks, if I'm to be completely honest. You grow to hate your tracks when you're working on them too much, trying to make them perfect, and then you realize that they're not. But that's the beauty in it, the never-ending improvement and discoveries.

What track are you most excited to drop in a sets?
It's always the least one I just finished. In this case, it's the new mix I did for the US label Ovum. I love to try fresh, new things from the studio straight onto the big sound system.

What's your favourite track that you wish worked in a set?
"Wood Lesty" by Zendid. It will always be something that is too soft for my sets. I don't get the chance to play opening sets often, so I miss the change to play so many great records out there.

What's the last song you want to hear before the lights go on?
Konplott "Close Your Eyes"
