JD Twitch's 'New So Low' Mix is a Creeping, Crawling, Late Night Masterpiece

The Optimo DJ's industrial, cold wave, and 80s synth mix drops on Vinyl Factory later this month — check out the mini mix now.

News of a new mix from one of the Optimo boys is up there with finding a fiver in your jeans pocket, or snaring the last ham, cheese and tomato croissant in Pret in the "good things that could realistically happen on a Thursday morning" stakes. We can't remember the last time we had money in our account to take out, and breakfast today was a bowl of sawdust and tears, so we'll have to make do with the announcement of JD Twitch's So Low, a new 16 track mix of industrial, cold wave and early 80s synth experimentation, set to hit shops on the 19th of February via Vinyl Factory.

Born out of a semi-regular night Twitch hosted in Glasgow, the mix is rooted in the music that he played out when he first started DJing in the late 80s. "At that time the audience I played to mostly loathed what I was playing and rarely danced but then shortly after, when House music arrived I found a different audience who actually liked to dance," he says. "In response to my wife's deep love of this music and requests from some friends who were too young to hear it in a club at the time, or indeed were not even born when most of this music was made, I was persuaded to revisit a lot of records I still loved but rarely played out, and So Low was born. It has an extremely enthusiastic audience, a joyous atmosphere and is the antithesis of what a club in Scotland playing this music nearly 30 years ago would have been like."

To get you in the mood for the full mix, Twitch has put this 17 minute masterpiece together. Featuring the likes of Front 242 and Chris & Cosey, it's a dark, clanking, lurching, crawling thing that's making us feel a bit sick. In a good way. Check it out below.
