Danny Brown Shares Details About His Joy Division-Inspired New Album, 'Atrocity Exhibition'

Danny Brown has revealed details of his new album, Atrocity Exhibition, set for release September 30. Inspired by Talking Heads, Bjork, System of a Down and the Joy Division song of the same name, Atrocity Exhibition will feature work from producers such as Evian Christ, The Alchemist and Black Milk, as well as singer-songwriter Petite Noir.

His first solo release in three years and his debut album on Warp Records, Atrocity Exhibition will take a detour from his EDM-heavy 2013 album Old and return to his sample-based origins. Rolling Stone reports Brown and his collaborator Paul White spent $70,000 alone just to clear the new record's samples.

"A lot of people cheap. And that's why their music sounds cheap," Brown told Rolling Stone. "I wanna make timeless stuff, so you're gonna have to spend a couple dollars. You could have Rolex or you can have a Swatch."

Brown made a conscious decision to return to his signature sound, saying his use of EDM was a calculated move to play more live shows. "That was what was a part of my world, doing festivals. Whereas this album is just my sound. This is Danny Brown," he said.
