Dave Smith, who worked on the first polyphonic analog synthesizer and helped to develop MIDI technology, is a genuine pioneer in the synth world. So, it's exciting to see him collaborating with Pioneer DJ for the new Toraiz SP-16 sampler.

Laptops and MIDI controllers have mostly replaced hardware samplers, but more and more electronic artists are trying to get away from staring at a screen onstage, which has created a demand for portable gear that doesn't require a computer. The Toraiz SP-16 incorporates the same high and low-pass analog filters of Smith's iconic Prophet-6 synth, and also syncs up with Pioneer CDJ or XDJ setups, a feature that encourages hybrid DJ/live performances.

The Toraiz SP-16 also has a 16-step sequencer, velocity-sensitive performance pads, a full-colour touch-screen interface, and 8GB of onboard memory. It should hit stores this summer, at a price of $1499.
